The importance of manipulative activities

Image
In Math field, one of the most important skills that have to be developed is the logical thinking The logical thinking is developed since children, through exploration and observation of different objects. In general terms, what they do is to manipulate and classify these objects in a logical way. So analyzing what I have said, we can see that the manipulative part is essential part that helps our students. In this way, we have to take into account this fact in order to give experiences where they can experiment through manipulative objects, such as geoboard, policubos, origami... Geoboard Policubes Origami The fine mobily is well worked through it. Nevertheless, I can underline that we can do origami through recycled material. Moreover, students can use this video in order to do different polyhedros palying it the times that they need. During their daily session we can facilitate those diffe...

Geometry through artworks

Image
Geometry as we know is essential to make relation between space and form or our surroundings.   In this way, students need to understand and to know about the flat and solid geometry that exist in order to realize how the world is constructed.   It can be carried and worked through different ways, such as artworks where it can be observed geometrical figures that have a hidden meaning. Here there is the first example the illustrator Matt Stevens, who does in his drawings a brilliant mix between sports and geometrical figures. If we go in depth we can see, in his book, different athletes are illustrated doing different sports where you can observe different geometrical figures. All of them refer to how different elements, the strategies of the play ...   are infiltrated through geometry. Secondly, we also can do it through Kandinsky and his “Composition VIII”. He uses abstract art in order to represent movement, the movement of the ...

Geometry and young learners

Image
I´m sure that you have found some difficulties in working geometrical names with young learners, because there are too many names to memorize all of them. Sometimes they learn the different names by a passive memorization, which would be forgotten in a few years due to the fact that it isn´t a meaningful learning. What we can do for avoiding this issue? Well, there are different activities that are enjoyable for our learners having a powerful and meaningful dynamic. Here you have a really appealing example: -2D SHAPES PUPPETS- It is really enjoyable game, where students have to create different puppets with geometrical shapes. These are made by cardboards of different colours, and drawing with different funny faces. Then they can do a litte piece of theatre, where they have to present what they are represented. In this way students can learn different names and how to represent them, associating name with shape unconsciously.  I hope that you have enjoyed ...

Geometry and Physical Education!

Image
Here I am again! Today I bring an engaging and appealing activity to connect Geometry with Physical Educaction subject; showing that it can be work in an interdisciplinary field. It is based in a competition, where pupils have to make different figures with their body on the floor. But for that the whole class have to be divided by two teams where they have to work cooperatively in orther to reach a common aim. Meanwhile the teacher task is to say out loud the geometrical figure or object with geometrical shape. I have to say that it is a really easy game to carry out in our classroom. Nevertheless, if we do it we are activating learners´ motivation and interest for geometry figures, because they will see a necessity to know perpectly all the geometrical figures´ name in order to be the winners. Moreover, they are working by group in a cooperativvely way for reach a common aim, whihc help with pupils´ innterpersonal intelligence boosting. Here you can see some representat...

Technology and Geometry

Image
Here I am again! As you know, today we are surrounded by technological advances, proposals to enhance certain technological capabilities to our students. Is it really carried out? Do you take advantage of these resources? All this will depend on the teacher, the ability that has to choose the most appropriate websites for your class, enhancing the technological capacity of students. Using technologies is not always a good thing, since in many centers there is a lack of technological equipment, or light can go at any given time. On the other hand, it has positive things such as the one that enhances the autonomous learning of the students, creating a complementary space to the classroom. In addition, they are usually free resources. For this reason, I would like to show you some of them that can be used by our pupils: - "Las matemáticas de Hades" That resource is proposed by Junta of Extremadura. It is named “ Las matemáticas de Hades ”, where you can find a pr...

Singing with geometry

Image
Here I am again! This post is connected with the last one. This underlines other different way to work with our pupils some geometry concepts, really enjoyable for our learners! As I have said there are too many ways to deal with different geometry concepts, such as music, sports games, TICS ... but which is the best one? Each one has their positive and negative points. Nevertheless, the geometry and music connection, in my view, is the most suitable one. I´m going to give you some reasons: - In an unconscious way Knowledge lasts over time. Who does not remember "head shoulders knees and toes" song? Thanks to this song we learned body parts in an easy and fun way. - It brings fun and rhythm to a topic that usually costs students many efforts, since they are difficult concepts to understand, attending to their psychological development. Here I leave you a good example↘ It is easy to see how students know how is represented the different lines, angles a...

Opening borders

Today I have a very interesting post about a Math method carried in Singapore. Here the traditional method is neglected in order to let place another way of teaching that is more focused on learners´ Math process understanding. Here I let you two videos about it; in the first one you will learn what it is and in the second one you will see a demonstration of it. I hope that you enjoy them!
